There are two major types of arthritis, but neither type can be easily diagnosed with a blood test. Osteoarthritis usually affects one or two major joints—often in the legs or hips. This is the most prevalent form of arthritis.

The second type, Rheumatoid Arthritis, causes the joint linings to become inflamed. It can affect multiple joints simultaneously as well as internal organs. With Rheumatoid Arthritis, joint cartilage is destroyed and the bone next to the cartilage becomes very soft. This type of arthritis is more serious and disabling. It affects many more women than men.

Although most of us think of arthritis as an inevitable result of aging, you may be surprised to know that over 300,000 children in the United States suffer from some form of the disease. In fact, according to the Arthritis Foundation, it is the leading cause of disability for Americans over the age of 15.
