Most knee and hip pain, especially that which results in joint replacement surgery, is caused by arthritis. Arthritis is the term used to describe damage to cartilage, the tough elastic tissue that cushions our joints and allows our bones to move against each other with very little friction. When cartilage is damaged through inflammation (infection) or just plain wear and tear, the bones in the hip and knee joints rub directly against each other and the result is pain and stiffness.
If you or someone you love is experiencing knee or hip pain, this section of our website will give you an in-depth look at the symptoms, diagnoses and the latest treatments available, including joint replacement surgery.
